Whether Burr will continue angling for a spot on a DOGE watchlist in his next Hulu special Drop Dead Years, which hits the streamer next month, remains to be seen. Filmed last summer at the Moore Theater in Seattle, it’s supposedly his most personal hour to date; the trailer, which you can check out below, finds Burr (who turns 57 in June) teeing off on open-casket funerals (“I don’t get it…You told me he was dead; I believed you!”) as well his own more-statistically-likely-than-ever demise. In a forthcoming conversation with GQ, Burr—who’ll also make his Broadway debut this coming month in Glengarry Glen Ross, playing Dave Moss, the Ed Harris part, opposite Kieran Culkin’s Ricky Roma—says his approach to comedy has changed after a brief “existential crisis” led him to question his motivation for still getting onstage after all these years.
Eventually, he explains, “this voice in my head said, ‘Well, maybe you could do it for the crowd for once, instead of being so goddamn selfish. Maybe somebody out there is having a bad time or their home life is coming unraveled or they don’t have a home. Maybe you could do it for them.’ I feel like finally getting out [from] between my ears and actually thinking about other people…brought this lightness, I like to think, anyways, to what I’m doing up there. I’m still talking about crazy stuff, but it’s not coming from the desperate or angry place that it used to be.”
Drop Dead Years premieres on Hulu on March 14th.
