God’s Grace and Hard Work

My wife Jean and I have had a wonderful marriage, but we’ve also faced challenges along the way.

One of the biggest – ironically enough – was when I became president of Focus on the Family. I was assuming leadership of an organization created to help families around the world. Although we supported that mission wholeheartedly, we were concerned about the impact it would have on our family. Would people expect our marriage to be perfect?

Since then, we’ve learned a lot about what it takes to build a great relationship. Like this: a strong marriage is no accident. It’s the result of good choices and hard work. Those aren’t popular ideas in a culture where everything is solved with the push of a button, but it’s true. Keep your relationship strong by investing in it. Give it the nourishment it needs to grow and to flourish.

Here’s another idea we’ve learned: strong couples turn stressful moments into opportunities to come together as a team. For Jean and me, that means a lot of conversation. In the past, it’s even meant professional counseling from time to time.

Thanks to good counsel and God’s grace, Jean and I have a stronger marriage today than ever. So can you. Be intentional and work together. And if you need extra help, don’t hesitate to reach out to Focus on the Family. We have counselors on hand who will listen, offer practical advice, and guide you to resources in your area. Give us a call at 1-800-A-FAMILY.
